Assumptions and disclaimer. Results are planning estimates, not a quote. Example figures are illustrative: use your own fuel, tariff and maintenance data. Diesel use is converted from miles per UK gallon (4.546 litres). Depot and home charging include 10% for charging losses; public prices are taken as billed. Charging shares are scaled to add up to 100% if they do not. The comparison covers fuel, energy and maintenance only, not vehicle prices, leasing, insurance, tax, grants, charger costs or residual values. Real-world efficiency falls in cold weather and with heavy loads.

How to use it

Getting reliable results

Get the inputs right

Use fuel-card data for real diesel economy

Use winter efficiency figures for electric vehicles

Set the charging mix from how drivers really work

Use the tariffs you actually pay, not list prices

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How do you work out an electric van's cost per mile?

Divide the electricity price by the miles the van covers per kWh, weighted by where it charges, then add maintenance. Depot and home charging also lose some energy as heat.

Is an electric van cheaper to run than a diesel?

Often, when most charging happens at a depot or at home on lower tariffs. Heavy use of public rapid charging can narrow or reverse the gap.

How should I reimburse drivers for home charging?

Many fleets repay metered kWh at an agreed rate or use HMRC's advisory electric rates per mile. Check the current rates and take tax advice.

Does the calculator include vehicle and charger costs?

No. It compares fuel, energy and maintenance per mile. Vehicle prices, leasing, chargers, grants and residual values need a full cost of ownership model.

Why does the charging mix matter so much?

Public charging usually costs far more per kWh than depot or home charging, so even a small share can move the cost per mile.

Is the result a quote?

No. It is a planning estimate. Use your own fuel, tariff and maintenance data for decisions.
