In short: UK businesses can get government help with EV charging and vehicles through several schemes, often still called OZEV grants after the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles. The Workplace Charging Scheme offers up to £500 per socket for up to 40 sockets. The Depot Charging Scheme supports charging for vans, coaches and HGVs, covering up to 70% of the cost. Landlords, state-funded education and local authorities have their own schemes, and electric vans and trucks get a discount at the point of sale. Check the rules before you install, because some grants cannot be claimed after the work is done.
Grant rules change often, so treat this as a map of what exists and what to check, and confirm the current terms on GOV.UK before you commit. The figures below were correct on the government pages cited at the time of writing.
Which grants are available?
| Scheme | Who it is for | What it offers |
|---|---|---|
| Workplace Charging Scheme | Businesses, charities and public sector organisations | Up to £500 per socket, up to 40 sockets across all sites |
| Workplace Charging Scheme for state-funded education | State-funded education institutions | Up to £2,000 per socket, up to 40 sockets |
| Landlord grant | Landlords, social housing providers, property managers, public sector | Up to £500 per socket, up to 200 sockets |
| Depot Charging Scheme | Businesses and public authorities with van, coach and HGV depots | Up to 70% of the cost, saving up to £1 million |
| Local EV Infrastructure (LEVI) Fund | Local authorities in England | Funding for on-street charging for residents without driveways |

How long are the chargepoint grants available?
The government has said that five chargepoint grant schemes have been extended until 31 March 2027, with new grant rates. Three others, including the staff and fleets grant and the commercial landlord chargepoint grant, closed to applications on 31 March 2026. If you are planning a project for 2027, check whether funding will still be available when the work is completed.
What are the rules for the Workplace Charging Scheme?
The scheme has some conditions that catch people out. According to the guidance for installers:
- the installer must be OZEV-authorised to claim the grant;
- you must apply for a voucher before any chargepoints are installed, and installations made before voucher approval cannot be claimed;
- the grant covers up to 75% of the total costs, up to the per-socket maximum; and
- vouchers have an expiry date, so plan the installation to fit.
Workplace chargers must also meet the UK smart charging rules; see our guide to workplace EV charging.
What about depots?
The Depot Charging Scheme supports charging infrastructure for vans, coaches and HGVs. In March 2026 the government announced a £170 million boost, saying businesses and public authorities could save up to £1 million, covering up to 70% of the cost. Before applying, confirm which costs are eligible, whether grid connection costs are covered, and the completion deadline. Our Depot Charging Scheme explainer lists the questions to settle.
Are there grants for the vehicles too?
Yes. For electric vans and trucks, you do not apply for the grant; the seller includes it as a discount in the purchase price. The government says the van grant offers discounts of up to £5,000, and the truck grant up to £81,000 on the heaviest zero emission trucks, covering up to 40% of the cost. Eligibility depends on the vehicle, so ask the dealer which models qualify.
How do you make the most of grants?
- Check the rules before you start work, because some grants cannot be claimed retrospectively.
- Design on merit first, then apply the grant. A grant should not push you into the wrong solution.
- Use an authorised installer where the scheme requires one.
- Keep records of quotes, invoices and installation evidence for claims.
- Watch the deadlines, especially where grid connections could delay completion.
Grants reduce capital cost but not running costs, so compare options on lifetime cost; our total cost of ownership model shows how.
